New Roster Criteria
LRCY has implemented Pre-Service Training for potential roster lawyers. Attendance at a Child Representation workshop (held in 2005) or LRCY Pre-Service Training is one of the criteria for membership in the LRCY Roster. Other criteria to be eligible and maintain membership on the roster includes:

Being an active member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta, and
-
Willing to provide legal representation according to the expectations and service standards as set out in LRCY Policy, and
-
Attending at least one training session (of 3 hours) approved by LRCY in a calendar year, and
-
Providing any information requested by the LRCY Manager.
Role of the Lawyer
A discussion paper is being circulated for comments.

A summary report is now available of the discussion and input during consultation sessions held October 3 & 10, 2007.
Enhanced Roster Criteria
In 2008, LRCY will be implementing new roster criteria for lawyers who are on the LRCY roster. In order for lawyers to maintain membership on the roster, lawyers must attend at least one training session (of 3 hours) approved by LRCY in a calendar year. Approved training courses will be available shortly.
Information Sharing With Caseworkers
LRCY is working with Children's Services Workforce Development to update information in the delegation training of new caseworkers. In early 2007 we began information sharing sessions with Child and Family Services Authority and Delegated First Nation Agency staff.

LRCY Hosts Web Cast
A pilot web cast was held on January 24 with lawyers living in northern Alberta. It provided a real time consultation opportunity. The pilot led to another being held in March 2006.
December 15, 2005
View of the Current Process Report
An information gathering project focused on the 2005 methods of providing legal representation for children and youth. It found that providing legal counsel for young people posed a number of unique challenges. Calgary legal consultant Jonathan Carlzon interviewed 12 lawyers and a provincial court judge for the project. All participants had experience in the representation of children and five lawyers practiced in rural areas. Click here to read the whole report.
